let's see. ombudsman, check. progress in the IANA function, check.
hearty new gtld discussion, check. a strong contribution from nomcom in
manning key ICANN posts, check (especially the addition of joi!). peaceful relations between ICANN and Verisign? well, four out of five isn't bad.
I saw more clear signs of progress at this meeting then I have at any
other in all the years I have been attending these things. frank fowlie looks really promising as the new ombudsman. doug barton,
ex-yahoo dns geek, appears to be making real progress with the IANA
function. these two things have been constant laments from ICANN
critics.
the contribution of the nominating committee is especially interesting.
I had originally thought of the nominating committee as a bridge to
eventual direct elections. now I am not so sure. if the nominating
committee keeps stocking the pool with strong candidates that appear to
be quite likely to well represent the interests of internet users, not
business, not policy and not governments, then the need for direct
elections may be obviated.

On the Nominating Committee? I sat on the first NomComm and, to borrow an old adage, found it a bit like watching the making of sausage. What I do know is that someone with strong, known opinions is unlikely to be appointed by the NomComm, while that same person might have an advantage in an election. Is this a good thing? It's open to debate. Based on group dynamics and the composition of the NomComm, I also doubt you'll ever see a North American representative appointed by the NomComm who comes from the user community. Is that a good thing? I don't think so.

if that is because vint holds that spot forever then that is ok with me. I think joi will represent users quite well. I also think mohamet diop is doing a good job with this.
if the tradeoff is global representation vs a north american who comes from the user community than that is ok with me. and tradeoffs are, unfortunately, what all politics are about. I did find irony in your view about someone outspoken doing well in elections. I have yet to see this actually occur in meatspace. anywhere. Re: hmmm......perhaps they can

Under the bylaws, Vint has just begin serving the last term for which he is eligible. When he steps down, I think you're likely to see a corporatist-type selected. When I say that someone with strong, known opinions is unlikely to be selected by the NomComm, I don't people who are loud and obnoxious. I'm talking about the same set of skills that, in many circumstances, makes someone a "leader." Part of getting through the NomComm process involves being someone on whom the committee can reach a consensus agreement. That sort of process has positives and negatives, which are open to reasonable debate on both sides.
This is not to denegrate the efforts of the NomComm by any means. I'm certainly proud of the people my NomComm selected and the latest NomComm may have even outdone us! Bret Re: hmmm......perhaps they can
