Re: Verisign, SiteFinder and Stewardship
by Rogie
Regardless of what value VRSN puts on this "stewardship" (and thus how well they honour this role/priviledge), ultimately it is the delegator of this role that should answser for any malapropisms of their stewards, and in fact show vigilance against any abuse of this trust. The role of the steward...like the proxy...should directly reflect the intent of the actual title holder through a clearly expressed mandate, and the delegation thereof to a named steward. This mandate should also obviously define processes for recognizing, and rectifying any breach of this trust....Otherwise public perceptions will simply associate the acts of the steward to the title holder, and judge them both in tandem. Without a clear expression of delegation, and a delination of roles and corrective duties during any abherations to this (now submerged) mandate, how can the pride and responsability of representation be traced to the steward in order to hold them accountable...and encourage healthy "arms-length" growth via stewardship ? Disconnected stewardship will eventualy undermine the foundation principals (wherever they may actually exist)...and leave the public to judge the entire structure according to the visible evidence manifested by such apperant stewardships...Currently evidenced in the case of VRSN's Sitefinder fiasco as a simplistic act of (bi-lateraly) defered responsabilities from either absent/silent title holders, or unaccountable stewards. IMHO: Not a healthy public environment for fostering trust, and future growth. ie. Could you imagine the consequences to the Ford Motor Company brand if they had allowed their dealerships to switch engine parts without disclosure, or engage in deceptive transactional practices that undermined implicit ownership of goods purchased ? We are known by the company we keep...and do business with. I personaly hope that ICANN will re-position itself back into it's (erstwhile) authoritative and responsable titulary role before this type of errosion of trust sets into a terminal phase of negative industrial/public perceptions. Then again... the idea of an alternate root zone for new TLD's has never struck me as terribly apocalyptic ;-}
